New Jersey State Fair - Sussex County Farm and Horse Show

Now that His Royal Highness, Prince George of Cambridge, has safely arrived, I can turn my thoughts to events more local to the Whistling Swan Inn, my bed and breakfast in Sussex County, New Jersey.

The New Jersey State Fair/Sussex County Farm and Horse Show will be held from August 2-11, 2013 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Considering that prices are always increasing, it's refreshing to know that admission to the fair is the same as 2012.

Adult admission price is $12 ($9 for seniors 60+; proof of age required). By doing a little advanced planning, you can save some money. Advance ticket sales until August 1st is $10

According to the web site dedicated to fair activities, its mission (with my editorial comments in parentheses) is:

  • To showcase New Jersey's agriculture (we ARE, after all, the Garden State)
  • Provide safe, family-friendly entertainment (safe and friendly are always optimal)
  • Present educational activities (learning something new keeps the brain cells flexible)
  • Promote youth development (always a good thing)
  • Give financial support to charitable non-profit agencies ($$$ helps)

Fairgrounds are conveniently located approximately 30 minutes from the InnClick for highlights of this year's event.

This says it all, friends. The NJ State Fair is THE place to experience country living at its best, and something I look forward to every summer. Maybe I'll see you there.

Mid-week July Special - 25% Savings

It's really heating up here in the New Jersey Skylands. Why not consider a relaxing mid-week getaway at the Whistling Swan Inn, my Stanhope bed and breakfast?  Book mid-week through July 31st (Sunday-Thursday) and save 25%*.

There's an abundance of things to do in the area that can keep you active, but cool. Northern New Jersey boasts dozens of pristine lakes, which are very close to the Inn. Only a short drive away is Lake Aeroflex, which is a favorite not only for canoeing and kayaking, but apparently is THE place to fish.

Sun worshiper? Lake Hopatcong has two marvelous public beaches where you can take a refreshing dip or work on your tan.

After a fun-filled day, come back to the inn and chill out on our wraparound veranda before popping off for a delicious dinner at one of our fine nearby restaurants.

The Skylands await...

* Offer valid for travel in July. May not be combined with other offers or gift certificates. Does not apply to previously booked reservations.

Elvis Still Lives at the Chatterbox Drive-in

The Skylands region of New Jersey, is filled with hidden gems. While shopping for carpet recently, my friend, Joanne, took me to her favorite haunt, the Chatterbox Drive-In, which is located in Augusta, only 20 minutes away from my bed and breakfast, the Whistling Swan Inn.

Lunch at the Chatterbox is like stepping onto the set of "American Graffiti". A large, circular seating area surrounds a platform, which displays a classic car, motorcycle or hot rod, all circa late 50's or early 60's. Playing in the background while I ate my Craisy Chicken Salad, was the Motown Sound, Elvis and Fats Domino, and owner, Don Hall, made his rounds to every table. From Memorial Day to Labor Day there's even carhop service, except on Saturday nights when they have "Cruise Night"

On Saturday, July 13th, Henry Winkler (aka the Fonz) will be at the Chatterbox, arriving at 3:00 pm. So, pull your leather jacket out of mothballs and be there or be square.

A Little Cheesecake at the Whistling Swan Inn

The Whistling Swan Inn is a perfect venue for an intimate wedding reception that is customized to each bridal couple's specific needs and budget. When Bob and Lynn came to my Sussex County bed and breakfast in January to book their June 29th wedding, they had a very precise vision for their big day. They wanted their wedding weekend to be a joyous mingling of old friends and cherished family celebrating their commitment with good food, exquisite wines and lively music in a relaxed atmosphere.

Cheese from Valley Shepherd Creamery
Design by Joanne and Courtney
A wine importer, Bob is quite a gourmand and, so with a nod to his Italian heritage, appetizers included a cheese and proscuitto station. The locally made cheeses came from Valley Shepherd Creamerya family-owned farm in Long Valley, NJ. Bob challenged our creativity, because he wanted the three wheels of cheese to resemble a wedding cake. (They even had a humorous cake topper for it). Armed with curly parsley, Brussels sprouts and red and white grapes, my helpers Joanne and Courtney fashioned the work of art represented in the photo at right. I offered encouragement and a few comments during the process, but even I know when to get out of the way of creative genius.
