Celebrate Mother's Day at the Whistling Swan Inn

May is the month we traditionally honor our mothers or those special women who offered care, nurturing and a mother's love. During the entire month, the Whistling Swan Inn, my New Jersey bed and breakfast, is offering a special Mother's Day package. It includes:
My mom, Jody, circa 1992

  • Chilled champagne or sparkling cider
  • Fresh strawberries served with the Inn's signature Devonshire cream
  • $50 gift certificate to one of the area's fine dining establishments
  • Bouquet of spring flowers
  • "Pamper" bag for Mom to take home

You'll definitely score some extra points this year if you treat the favorite Mom in your life to a relaxing getaway at the Whistling Swan Inn.

For the special Mother's Day package, please add $149 to your room rate.

Take a Stroll Through Waterloo Village

History has always been a passion of mine, and I think it's important to preserve our historical treasures for future generations. I feel so strongly about historical preservation that I accepted an invitation to be on the advisory committee of the Friends of Waterloo Village, which is comprised of a small, but committed group of citizens who are dedicated to saving and restoring this historic district.

Located only a mile away from the Whistling Swan Inn, my Sussex County bed and breakfast, Waterloo Village is a restored 19th century canal town with a blacksmith shop, gristmill, post office and much more. The Friends of Waterloo Village are sponsoring interesting and informative strolls on several Sundays throughout the year. There will even be an opportunity to explore New Jersey's Canal Museum, and for those with a hardy constitution, a two-mile hike along the Musconetcong River to inspect the Morris Canal remains of an inclined plane and some ice houses.

Sunday Walks in Waterloo will be held on April 7th; April 14th; May 5th; May 26th; June 2nd and November 10th.

To register, please contact Bob Barth at bbarth@att.net. Check out the web sites at www.friendsofwaterloovillage.com; www.CanalSocietyNJ.org, and www.winakungatWaterloo.com.

Party Down at the Whistling Swan Inn

Ever since I was a little girl, which is more years ago than I care to acknowledge, I've always loved a good party. I loved planning them, hosting them, attending them and rehashing them. So it's no surprise that hosting parties at my New Jersey bed and breakfast, the Whistling Swan Inn, is one of my favorite jobs as innkeeper.

We get a lot of requests for bridal and baby shower teas. Inside, the Inn can accommodate a maximum of 35 guests. Out goes the furniture, and the parlor is transformed (or nearly transformed) into an English tearoom. The pictures are from the baby shower tea we had this past weekend.

Now that the weather is warming up, we'll have the events on our beautiful wraparound veranda, which can hold up to 60 people. Teas are held from 1:00-4:00 pm and feature a three-course lunch. A sample menu could be buttery cream scones, my famous spinach and cheddar quiche, delectable shrimp and dill sandwiches and a sampling of finger desserts.

Of course getting married or having a baby are not prerequisites for having a lovely tea party at the Inn. Your spring book or garden club meeting is a perfect excuse to get together for some good food served elegantly. The price for our custom teas is $20.95 per person, which includes table settings, linens and waitstaff.

When was the last time you savored a cup of tea in a charming setting with your dearest friends?

Culinary Weekend Getaway at the Whistling Swan Inn

Tom and Diane - ready to work
their kitchen magic
The Whistling Swan Inn in Stanhope, NJ will be partnering with renowned chefs, Tom and Diane Faglon, for a Culinary Weekend getaway to be held on Friday and Saturday, April 5th and 6th. Tom and Diane, who are longtime guests of the Inn, will demonstrate how elegant entertaining can be easy.

The weekend event is part "hands-on" workshops where participants will experience chocolate tasting and wine/cheese pairing and learn how to make one of Tom's famous chocolate confections. A second workshop focuses on creating delightful canapes using phyllo dough led by Chef Diane.

The evening will culminate in a three-course dinner prepared by Tom and Diane in the Inn's own kitchen and served in our dining room.

Tom and Diane are avid gourmets, party planners and award-winning chefs. They've appeared on the Food Network's "Food Fantasy" TV series, and their culinary adventures, recipes and dinner parties have been the subject of several articles in New Jersey newspapers. Most recently, Tom won first prize in the 2012 National Oyster Cook-off (soup category) with his Oyster Royale soup. (recipe)

This weekend is designed for anyone who loves good food, elegantly prepared. It's an opportunity to learn some new cooking tips; Tom and Diane will also be sharing their recipes so you'll be able to replicate the dinner at home and WOW your friends and family with your culinary expertise.

Bring your mother/daughter/partner/girlfriends and get ready for a weekend of food and fun.
